Scotforth in the Domesday Book (1086)

YEAR: 1086 HUNDRED: Amounderness COUNTY: Yorkshire

Scotforth is named in the Domesday Book, compiled by Norman commissioners in 1086, entered under the hundred of Amounderness in Yorkshire. The survey assessed Scotforth at 1 carucate of taxable land.

At the time of the survey, Scotforth supported a recorded population of 3 villagers, 4 smallholders, 2 slaves, working 3 ploughs between them.

By 1086 Scotforth was worth 4 shillings, up from 2.5 shillings before the Conquest – in contrast to many Yorkshire neighbours whose valuations collapsed.

The Meaning of the Name

The name Scotforth is of Anglo-Saxon origin. Its final element derives from the Old English word ford, a river crossing. The first element is most likely a personal name or an early descriptive term, now difficult to recover with certainty. Taken together the name probably meant something close to ‘a ford’.

Remarkably, the name has changed little since 1086, when the Domesday scribes wrote it as Scotforth.
